Obong of Calabar Tussle: Efik Chiefs, Citizens Call on NJC, NBA and FG to Intervene
The ongoing controversy surrounding the Obong of Calabar stool has taken a new turn, with stakeholders expressing disappointment over Governor Senator Prince Otu's decision to take sides in the dispute. Indigenes of the Efik kingdom in Calabar, Cross River State, are urging the governor to remain neutral and allow the rule of law to prevail, as per the Supreme Court's judgment NO. 633/2013 of 13th January 2013.
In a recent outcry, some indigenes and chiefs called on the Nigerian Judicial Council (NJC), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and the federal government to prevail on Governor Otu to respect the rule of law and refrain from manipulating the case to favor his preferred candidate, Etubom Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu.
The Supreme Court's judgment had ruled that the selection process of Etubom Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu was flawed and ordered a new selection process. However, Governor Otu allegedly pressured the main contender, former Nigerian Finance Minister, Chief Tony Ani, to withdraw the case. This move has sparked concerns that the governor is attempting to undermine the rule of law.
The stakeholders are worried that Governor Otu's actions may escalate tensions and create divisions within the Efik kingdom. They argue that the rule of law should be allowed to prevail, ensuring a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
The dispute revolves around the rightful occupant of the Obong of Calabar stool, with different factions claiming legitimacy. The stakeholders urge Governor Otu to remain neutral and avoid taking sides, which means to respect the Supreme Court's judgment and uphold the law and allow the legal process to run its course. By doing so, Governor Otu can help restore stability and dignity to the Obong of Calabar stool, ensuring the continued unity and prosperity of the Efik kingdom.
The public outcry also aims to draw attention to various incidents, including a press release from the governor's office demanding Chief Tony Ani withdraw the case. The stakeholders are concerned that Governor Otu's actions may desecrate the judicial institution, abuse office, and show contempt for the court.
